“because I could not stop for Death”
presented by Pottery Northwest

Opening Reception:
Friday, July 14 | 6-8PM | FREE

Pottery Northwest presents “because I could not stop for Death,” an exhibition by resident artist Ryana Lawson. This exhibit explores the theme of tension through the physicality of Lawson’s pieces and the interaction of built forms: a large snake constricts against a pot, the necks of two swans are entangled in a knot and two slugs are entwined in their intricate dance of love. Each original handbuilt piece acts as a memento mori — a curious contrast between fauna and flora that exist among us, the preciousness of life, and the reminder of how fleeting it is.

MOTH WORKSHOP

Monday, July 24 | 6-9pm

As a part of her exit show, resident artist Ryana Lawson will be hosting a workshop making moth plates. Moths have become a staple in Ryana’s work, being delicate creatures with colorful and unique wing patterns, often camouflaged in nature to resemble something more deadly. In this workshop, we’ll be crafting paper templates as a guide and then pinching our own moths in Ryana’s style. You will be able to design and decorate your moth with underglazes as a way to further connect with her exit show, because I could not stop for death, currently on view.
