Studio
Monitors

Studio monitors enable the Pottery Northwest studio to stay open for students and studio access members after hours when there is no staff member onsite. In exchange for working a set studio monitor shift for the duration of the quarter, studio monitors receive a guaranteed free and ongoing studio access membership.

What does a studio monitor do?

Studio Monitors help community members with basic studio questions (i.e. "where is the greenware cart?"), retrieve bags/boxes of clay for members, are the point people in case of injury or emergency, complete simple studio cleaning and tidying tasks, and close and lock up the studio safely at the end of the night. Outside of this, studio monitors are free to create their own work while on shift.

Available shift times are everyday from 6pm to 9pm. Only evening shift times are available.

We currently do not have any openings for studio monitors.

  • Only individuals who have previously taken at least one quarter-long class or studio access at our Pioneer Square studio are eligible to be a studio monitor. This ensures all of the monitors are familiar with our studio logistics, policies, and procedures.

Studio monitors must be 18 or over, able to lift 25-50 pounds, and be comfortable closing up and leaving the studio after 9pm.

If you need financial assistance to enroll in one of our classes or studio access, please visit our tuition assistance page.

  • Studio Monitors must commit to at least one full quarter (10 weeks) of their studio monitor shift. Studio monitors work their agreed-upon day/shift once a week, for the entire length of the quarter.

For example, a Studio Monitor who signed up to work the Saturday 6-9pm shifts for the winter 2023 quarter, will work every Saturday for the full duration of winter quarter. Our quarters are each 10 weeks in length.

Studio monitors can remain in their roles indefinitely unless they or the studio staff choose to discontinue the relationship.

  • In exchange for working their weekly shift, studio monitors receive an ongoing studio access membership.

This means studio monitors do not need to register for studio access every quarter so long as they remain a studio monitor in subsequent quarters.

  • At this time, we only have a need for evening studio monitors. All studio monitor shifts take place daily from 6-9pm.

Due to the ongoing, daily needs of the studio, we can not reserve a studio monitor position for anyone. Studio monitor openings become available the quarter a spot becomes available and we can not delay a studio monitor’s start date to a later quarter. Similarly, if a studio monitor must take a quarter off, we cannot hold their studio monitor role for them while they are away. For example, a monitor who works winter and spring quarters and needs to take the summer quarter off but can return after summer cannot be accommodated. In this scenario, they will lose their studio monitor role and have to reapply when a monitor opening becomes available next.

  • We currently do not have any openings for studio monitors. Since we only have openings when one of our current monitors chooses to leave, we do not have a date as to when the next studio monitor application will open again.

You can be notified when the application opens next by joining the waitlist.
