I have the first piece I made out of clay; created when I was nine years old.

Fifty years later, the satisfaction and excitement of seeing my work come to fruition has not diminished. I still marvel at the various properties clay takes on before firing changes it back into the rock like form from which it came millions of years ago.

As a young adult, I was fascinated with wheel throwing, but, over time, my interest has shifted to hand building. Much of my recent work has involved combining press molded slab pieces with thrown additions. The vessels have developed out of utilitarian forms to become more sculptural and decorative in nature.

Often, successful art comes out of the interplay of two diametrically opposite forces or ideas. In the case of my work, random organic shapes and textures are constrained within a precise three dimensional form. The resulting visual contrast is the essence of the direction I am taking in the creative process.
