It's true...I have been a clown in the circus, could do a Cassock
vault on horseback, know a great deal about magic (don’t ask
me), portrayed the Elephant Man in a very good production of the
stage play, climbed Devil’s Tower. All of these are irrational
pursuits. It follows one would look for a career in the arts.
I value content over style, but retain a healthy fascination with
ambiguity. They are not exclusive of one another. Finally, technical
prowess is of less signifigance to me, but I still love to watch
a master work. The idea that one should ”just ask the big
questions” in one’s work has been a powerful notion
to me. It touches upon the difference between art and craft. Unlike
many of my colleagues, it is a difference I acknowledge. I love
both, and have played there with abandon. I am quite taken with
aphorisms and the like, those gems that seem to sum up a life’s
work in a poetic flourish. Can’t think of one right now though...not
quite done. |
